FIXED TERM
The Department of History in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Classical Studies, specialising in Classical history and culture.
The Classical Studies programme is housed in the Department of History at Winchester. A highly successful department, all staff undertake excellent teaching (100% for overall subject satisfaction in Classical Studies, NSS 2021) and research (our percentage of ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ research in REF 2021 was 60%, up from 55% in REF 2014). Its range is rich and diverse, including Classical to Modern British and European History and Modern North American, Japanese, and Colonial/ Postcolonial History.
The successful candidate will work closely, primarily, with Dr Polly Stoker (Programme Leader) and Dr Carey Fleiner. Working in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of History, you will teach modules on Classical history (introductory modules on Greek history), together with courses on fifth-century Athens and Alexander the Great. You may also be required to contribute to modules on public history and historical methodology in the University’s current BA and MA programmes and supervise undergraduate dissertations. The post does require contributions to the administration of the Department and its programmes.
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in the relevant field of Classics and experience of teaching in higher education. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively are also essential. A track record of existing or forthcoming publications is a plus.
