The Law Department is one of six Departments within the Faculty of Business, Law and Sport. It is forward-looking with a vision that embraces undergraduate and post-graduate provision, excellence in learning and teaching, research and consultancy/CPD activity.
The University is seeking to make a senior appointment of Head of Department and Professor / Reader of Law. The Head of Department position is for four years after which the role holder will transfer to their substantive position of Professor or Reader (dependent on qualifications and experience).
We are seeking a Head of Department with excellent leadership, management, communication and negotiation skills who has the ability to shape and deliver a vision for legal education, to facilitate collaborative partnerships and to secure funding to support research and knowledge exchange activity.
Expected to provide strategic leadership in establishing and developing an entrepreneurial and sustainable business plan for the law programme portfolio and research and knowledge exchange activity, the role requires a sophisticated understanding of the law discipline to lead the future development and delivery of the Department's programme portfolio and research and knowledge exchange activity,
An additional responsibility for the role is in the operation of the Research Centre for Information Rights and the Centre for Parliament and Public Law and it is important that the successful candidate is fully able to contribute to embedding a culture and capacity within the Department, Faculty and University that supports the transfer and exchange of knowledge between other institutions, the profession, business and the wider community.
Applications are welcomed from candidates who may not meet the criteria for Professor or Reader but have the qualifications and experience commensurate with the Head of Department position and can demonstrate a commitment to and proven track record in academic leadership, research and knowledge exchange in law. Educated to doctoral level and experience of supervising PhD students to completion is essential for appointment as Professor and Reader.
The Head of Department and Reader positions are at Grade 9 and at Grade 10 if appointed at Professor.
